Distributive Property of Multiplication Hands on Bakery Activity

Help reinforce the difficult skill of distributive property of multiplication in a hands on way with the Distributive Property Bakery. By using cereal pieces or counters on the bakery recording sheet mats, students will build and form a variety of arrays shown via the powerpoint presentation. You can use any type of cereal. For instance I’ve used both Cinnamon Toast Crunch or Froot Loops.

After building the array students will use the distributive property to break apart the cereal or counters into two separate arrays. Finally students record their multiplication equations on the mats.

Included in the powerpoint slides are real photos of several possible ways to solve each problem. I display the photo array samples and have a class discussion about the many ways to solve the same equation. My students always have a blast baking up their break apart arrays to show the distributive property. Give it a try!

Multiplication Fluency Practice

Multiplication mastery is a MUST in 3rd grade and is the building block that leads to other concepts.
This year I use song fact videos to reinforce students mastery. The videos are repetitive and also show the facts visually on the screen. My students love them.

Another project that comes in handy is for building arrays.
I do this every year with my class and then each student becomes the "expert" on their array and teaches it to the class.

You can get this project from my TPT store.

In addition I also have a Multiplication Activity Bundle that may interest you.

What are some fun ways you teach multiplication?

So my Dollar Tree shopping spree landed me with these Jumbo fly swatters.

My first thought was that these were some overkill fly swatters for a tiny fly.
But I'm not using them to kill flies.

I'm using them for my Swat It team games.

More games to come too! I'm working on one for place value as well as Sight Word sets. So go grab your Jumbo Swatters!

Display the concept cards on your board, split into teams, and call off questions.
Teams have a swatting good time to hit the answers first!

I'm having a giveaway for these games

Multiplication Card Games: Deck Out Your Holidays with a Deck of Cards

Give your students a holiday gift that keeps them learning!

I put my rhyming skills to practice with this little number:

"Your teacher is so smart
She wants you to do your part
For learning fame
Do a card game"

I typed up the rhyme and 4 card game directions.
I made 2 different versions: One set focuses on addition and subtraction and the other set includes addition, subtraction, and multiplication.

Attach a deck of cards to the game set and you have a gift for students to "Deck Out their Holidays"

2 packs of cards at Dollar Tree makes your gift only 50 cents per student.

Making Multiplication Arrays

I use the very cute book Bunches and Bunches of Bunnies to introduce basic multiplication and arrays.
This book is written in rhyme with whimsical bunny illustrations. For example, one rhyme is as follows:

Count the bunnies at the ball
Rabbit partners short and tall
Now the music comes alive
And 5 x 5 = 25

I follow this story by having students create an array using small objects. Some students have used items like pennies, cereal, buttons, beans, stickers and more.

Like this idea?  Grab the {array worksheet}.

This is part of  a 3 product bundle of multiplication activities. You can grab it at a discount.

Balance Scale Math

Get multiplication into "balance" with this math lesson I created. Balance Scale Multiplication is played in partners with a scale, dice and counters. Each student rolls the dice, multiplies, and places the counters in their side of the scale. They record their equations for each turn on the worksheet below which is available on my {website}. At the end students compare their side of the scale as being heavier or lighter than their partner's.  This game makes multiplication a blast. This same game is also available for addition.
