Work of Heart Suitcases

Do you ever wonder what to do with all the student work you've kept all year? In years past, I've spent hours upon hours making memory books in scrapbook style that were combbinded. Yes, they were beyond adorable, but this year something had to give and that was my precious time.  So, I made a suitcase portfolio I called "My Work of Heart". Students colored the cover and we glued in on a suitcase made out of stapled tagboard. Then the fun began. I put the piles of yearlong "stuff" around the room and each student went around and found their pieces to put in their suitcase.  So easy and simple and the kids loved being a part of it. Plus it was a HUGE timesaver. Please do share what you do for your keepsakes.

Cool Compliments and Study Jams

My end of the year is FAST approaching.  I love to do an activity  I call "Cool Compliments". This one is perfect for the end of the year since classmates have learned lots about their friends. First we discuss what compliments are: positive and uplifting comments. Then each student tapes their "Cool Compliment" poster to their back and the fun begins. With pens in hand, students form writing trains around the room. Bending, squatting, leaning and smiling while feeling the warm fuzzies being written on their backs! The poster is then taken off and read.
What a keepsake.

Another similar idea I use ALL year long as a wonderful review tool for ANY topic is Study Jams. Tape a "Study Jam" sheet on their back with a topic indicated and let them study and review for a test!
What a perfect way to engage their learning in a hands on way. And students have a ready made study guide to take home.

Power of a Poem

As teacher appreciation celebrations comes to an end I'd like to pass on some inspiration to all my fellow bloggers. Below is a poem that I share every year with colleagues, especially new teachers. It's a heartfelt one titled "If I Could Teach You Teacher". I've typed up a copy for everyone to enjoy. I hope it becomes one of your favorites like it is mine. I keep it displayed in my teacher corner and when I need my spirits lifted I just have to glance at it and feel renewed! Feel free to leave a comment if this poem spoke to you.
