Desktop Organization Madness

Can I just say something has to give!  I've spent the last 2 days on and off organizing all my out of order documents on my computer into tidy folders. I think my hands are going to fall off. This is the second summer I've been in this spot. Hopefully, someone has some Mac tips for me. My Document folder now looks all organized like this.

The problem starts for me when I go to save a downloaded or new document. When asked where to save it I choose "Documents", but my whole list of folders doesn't drop down to put the new item in. The only option I see is the top 4 "Recent Folders". So my normal plan of attack is to save it to Documents with a "good plan" to move it to the correct folder right away. Does that happen? Sadly, not.  So I had a huge mess of loose documents not in folders that I just finished moving.  Macs users, can you give me any sanity tips for this? Is their a simple solution that will give me an Aha moment?  Pretty please, I hope so.

**Update: Mrs. Kincaid saved the day and found the answer for my computer struggles. See her comment below.  A HUGE shout out is called for.

Now after all this organizing, Kinder Kraziness, got me thinking of backing up files. She started a Data Saver Linky. I have a Macbook Pro and I backup all my files automatically with Apple's Time Capsule. No worry or fuss now over losing my stuff.

  3. I was determined, so I went on a google search and finally figured it out! :) In your save as dialog box, you'll find a small downward facing arrow beside the Save As file name box. When you click this arrow it drops down an extended save box. You can then navigate to find where you want to save your file. Here's a screen shot:

  4. Mrs. Kincaid,
You are a lifesaver! I won't have to suffer anymore.
Thank you, thank you. The solution was so simple.

  5. I use that, but sometime the downloads start automatically without an option of where to save. AHHHH! Oh well.

  6. I'm so glad you stopped by my linky party because I obviously have the same problem!!! I'm going to try Mrs. Kincaid's solution. Not being able to save it in a specific place was one of my biggest problems!

  7. Ohh...I love organizing. I also love mac computers! When you are using safari, you can change where your downloaded files are saved. You click safari, preferences, its in the first tab (general), and there is a drop down menu next to save downloaded files to:

I personally save everything to my jump drive that is categorized in a way to complicated to explain. When I download files I first save them to my desktop and then move them to the appropriate files on my jump drive. When I am planning, I pull the files I need from my jump drive onto my desktop for easy access. When I'm done, I just toss them (but they are still on my jump drive). That way there is nothing on my desktop, which is always projecting on my activ board.

  8. You crack me up, but you are not the only crazy fool who spent two days doing this:) I'm glad I'm not alone in my insane need to organize. Seriously, I couldn't find anything on my flash drive until I organized it.
